The Auxiliary Secretary of Montessori Education (known as SAEM in Puerto Rico) works within Puerto Rico’s Department of Education to develop the Montessori methodology in public schools across Puerto Rico.
SAEM promotes Montessori public schools with environments and a curriculum that facilitate a deep process of self-construction. Students go through stages where they manifest particular human tendencies that boost creativity and guide their development. At each stage, conquests are made that respond to their interests and needs, thus developing their intelligence. The student is subject to his education and creates his persona through the knowledge he is acquiring. In this way, the boy/girl creates the man/woman that he/she will become.
Montessori public school students work in environments designed to uncover knowledge; these are pleasant, intelligent, attractive and spacious spaces where children can move freely. These environments foster independence, respect and celebrate students’ individuality, the potential they possess and their ability to think for themselves. In addition, these environments promote learning in community, in relation to others and to the world.
